Developmental / Structural Editing

One editorial pass of the manuscript. This will include an editorial content letter and in-line comments, with the goal of strengthening the manuscript’s foundational structure and content and fully realizing the writer’s vision. It may involve deep restructuring of story elements such as plot, worldbuilding, character arcs, and narrative organization; ensuring that the manuscript is using/subverting its genre conventions to maximum effect; and that the story is conveyed in a cohesive and satisfying manner to the reader. Where appropriate, deliverables may also include a chapter breakdown and reference materials for the writer’s toolbox.

May be combined with line editing in a two-pass package. Does not include research or writing original material unless specified.

Line Editing

One editorial pass of the manuscript. This will include detailed in-line edits, with the goal of polishing the writer’s voice and ensuring a smooth and impactful reader experience. The focus is on sentence-level elements such as dialogue, word choice, sentence structure, imagery, and tone, and how they serve the narrative. Where appropriate, deliverables may also include an editorial letter with an overview of global changes and concerns.

May be combined with developmental editing in a two-pass package. Does not include the creation of a style sheet unless specified.

Copyediting and Proofreading

Copyediting: One copyediting pass of the manuscript. This will include in-line edits and a style sheet, with the goal of correcting for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other style elements; checking for internal consistency of facts and timelines; adhering to industry standards of style following the Chicago Manuel of Style (US) or New Hart’s Rules (UK).

Proofreading: One proofreading pass of the manuscript. This will include either a PDF mark-up or in-manuscript edits to correct errors in spelling, grammar, layout, and formatting.

Academic Editing

One editorial pass of a piece of academic writing (essay, thesis, journal article, book chapter, or monograph). This will include an editorial content letter and in-line comments, with the goal of clarifying and strengthening the structure, content, and formatting.

Most suitable for essay coursework and thesis writing in the arts and humanities, at bachelor’s and master’s level.
